Thymus Gland

This gland, lies in the chest, directly behind the breastbone, and in front of the heart in the area between lungs. It is named as thymus due to its shape being similar to that of thyme leaf.

It  is present in newborn babies. It gradually becomes smaller with age and is degenerated or lost in the adult. it secretes hormone called ThymosinThough the thymus begins to atrophy(decay)during puberty, its effect in training lymphocytes(cells important for our immunity) to fight infections even cancer lasts for a lifetime. 

Thymosin helps in production of lymphocyes and antibodies formation, hence help in immunity. It produces WBCS which fight infection. 

In case of reduction or absence of thymus function the person may suffer from immunodeficiency called as Aplasia.
